Residual Current Breaker with Over-Current protection (RCBO) is a safety device used in electrical systems that combines the functions of a Residual Current Device (RCD) and a Mini Circuit Breaker (MCB). An RCBO is designed to protect both people and equipment by detecting residual currents (leakage currents) and over-currents (overloads and short circuits). It is commonly used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications to enhance the safety and reliability of electrical installations.

The main features of an RCBO are:

Residual Current Protection

An RCBO constantly monitors the current flowing through the live (hot) and neutral wires of a circuit. Under normal conditions, the current flowing in both wires should be equal. However, if there is a leakage current (e.g., due to a faulty appliance or current flowing to the ground through a person), the RCBO detects the imbalance and trips, disconnecting the circuit to prevent electric shock.

Over-Current Protection

Similar to an MCB, an RCBO also offers protection against overloads and short circuits. Overloads occur when too much current flows through a circuit, usually due to too many devices being connected or a malfunctioning device. Short circuits happen when the live and neutral wires come into direct contact, resulting in an extremely high current flow. In both cases, the RCBO will trip and disconnect the circuit to prevent damage to electrical equipment, wiring, and reduce the risk of fire.

Combined Protection

By integrating both residual current and over-current protection in a single device, an RCBO provides comprehensive protection for electrical circuits, enhancing safety and reducing the need for separate RCDs and MCBs.

Easy Reset

Once the cause of the trip has been identified and resolved, the RCBO can be easily reset, restoring power to the circuit.

The AC Residual Current Circuit breaker is a safety appliance that protects personal safety and prevents electrical fires, can prevent electrical equipment from being damaged. It can be widely used in power distribution systems.

Applications and Markets
  1. Residential Buildings: RCBOs are used in homes to protect circuits supplying power to areas where there is an increased risk of electric shock, such as bathrooms, kitchens, and outdoor circuits.
  2. Commercial Buildings: In commercial environments like offices, retail stores, and restaurants, RCBOs can protect circuits that supply power to appliances, lighting, and other equipment, ensuring the safety of occupants and property.
  3. Industrial Facilities: In industrial settings, RCBOs can be used to protect sensitive equipment, control panels, and machinery from electrical faults, minimizing downtime and damage.
  4. Medical Facilities: RCBOs are particularly important in hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities, where they protect patients, staff, and medical equipment from electrical hazards.
  5. Educational Institutions: RCBOs are used in schools, colleges, and universities to protect students, staff, and electrical equipment from electrical faults and accidents.

FAQ

Question:
What is a Residual Current Circuit-Breaker (RCCB)?
Answer:
An RCCB is a mechanical switching device designed to make or break load currents under normal working conditions, and to automatically disconnect the contacts when the residual current reaches a predetermined value under specific conditions.

Question:
What is a Residual Current Device (RCD)?
Answer:
An RCD is a protective device that disconnects the main circuit when the residual current in the circuit reaches a specified value under defined conditions, causing the contacts to operate. A residual current device may consist of a combination of components capable of detecting residual currents and making or breaking the main circuit current.
In technical terms, Residual Current Devices (RCDs) must meet certain fundamental requirements.

Question:
What are the basic technical requirements for leakage protectors?
Answer:

1.Sensitivity for Electric Shock Protection: The sensitivity must be correctly and reasonably set, with the general tripping current ranging between 15 to 30mA for personal protection. For equipment protection, the sensitivity should be chosen based on the equipment's leakage current, typically ranging from 30 to 300mA.
2. Tripping Time for Electric Shock Protection: Under normal circumstances, the tripping time should not exceed 0.1 seconds to ensure rapid disconnection in the event of a fault.
3. Monitoring Equipment: The protector must be equipped with necessary monitoring devices to maintain protection effectiveness when operational states change. For voltage-type electric shock protectors, an earth connection for the neutral line should be installed.

Question:
What are Leakage protection functions by RCBO, RCCB, and RCD differences?
Answer:
RCBO (Residual Current operated Circuit-breaker with Integral Overcurrent protection) refers to a residual current-operated circuit breaker that can perform overload and/or short-circuit protection functions, such as an integrated leakage circuit breaker.
RCCB (Residual Current operated Circuit-breaker) refers to a residual current-operated switch that cannot perform overload and/or short-circuit protection functions, essentially a leakage switch.
RCD (Residual Current Devices) refers to residual current-operated protection devices whose detection, judgment, and disconnection functions are independent of the power supply voltage, such as residual current-operated accessories.

Question:
What is the max output wire size
Answer:
It could run max 58A. You should use 4-6 AWG wire for the output. But we could only fit for 6 AWG wire now. We would update this unit in the next version and make it could fit 4 AWG wires.

Question:
It says 1400w for 24v system, I have1600w because of 4s 4 p 100w 12v panels, this combiner box 1400w max? Mine is 1600w which is 200w over
Answer:
you should get 4 panels in 1 string. Then you would get a 48v combination and use 1 string in this box. 4 sting= 16 panels and it would work since the max current for 1 string would be 15A for this system. The cords and fuses are fitted.

Question:
Where can I buy Replacement 15a fuses?
Answer:
We provide some as the replacements in our original package. It should be 4 more in the package. If you want to purchase more, you could view our website.

Question:
I have 12*400 watts panels. I have 3 connect together in series. So 4 in total. During the day the panels pushes about 60A. would this work?
Answer:
No. the fuse is 15A rated.
